Personal Wireless Networking

If you’ve got a wireless network for your computers already, well, you might get a bit excited about what I’m going to say next. How would you feel if your PDA, your mobile phone, your mp3 player and almost everything else you connect to your computer could be wireless too? You’d like that? Well, it’s already a reality and has been for some time now.

Bluetooth is wireless and automatic, and has a number of interesting features that can simplify our daily lives. Bluetooth is a standard developed by a group of electronics manufacturers that allows any sort of electronic equipment — from computers and cell phones to keyboards and headphones — to make its own connections, without wires, cables or any direct action from a user. Read on…

Personal Area Network.

Using wireless networking with your personal gadgets is often called PAN, which stands for Personal Area Network. The idea is that, in the future, we’ll all have laptop computers with their batteries charged and no more need to connect any wires to them at all — you just place your Bluetooth device near the computer, and the computer sees it and can use it straightaway.

Bluetooth has been around and in-use since 1999, and it’s only getting more popular. It was designed to be secure, low cost, and easy to use from day one.

There are two classes of Bluetooth that are in popular use: class 1 and class 2. Class 2 is the most common and cheaper standard, allowing you to use a device that is up to 10 metres (32 feet) away. Class 1 is rarer, but you can still find devices that use it easily enough, and it has ten times the range: 100 metres or 320 feet.

How Does It Work?

Bluetooth is more flexible than 802.11 wireless networking, in exchange for the shorter range. Essentially, a Bluetooth-enabled computer has one Bluetooth receiver installed in it, and this receiver can then be used with up to 7 nearby Bluetooth devices. On the other end, wireless devices do not need to have Bluetooth installed if they support it — it is already integrated.

Like 802.11, Bluetooth works by using radio signals to create bandwidth. It is not, though, the same thing as an old-style wireless mouse or keyboard, which required a receiver to be plugged into one of your computers’ ports, and didn’t have range or stability anywhere near that of Bluetooth.

Many computers now come with built in Bluetooth, especially Apple Macs. If you want to add Bluetooth to a computer that doesn’t come with it pre-installed, you should probably use a USB to Bluetooth adapter, although internal Bluetooth devices to install in your computer are available. If you have a laptop and a spare PCMCIA slot, you can get Bluetooth cards for that too.

What Can You Do With Bluetooth?

Mobile phones with Bluetooth are very popular, and so are PDAs — the instant synchronisation of addresses and calendars to a computer is a useful feature. Other than that, almost anything that would usually use USB can be done using Bluetooth, including digital cameras, mp3 players, printers, and even mice and keyboards. If you take a look through the comprehensive list of Bluetooth ‘profiles’ (kinds of devices that could, in theory, be Bluetooth enabled), it includes cordless phones, faxes, headsets, and even video.

Basically, more than anything, Bluetooth is a replacement for USB: some say that while 802.11 wireless networking is wireless Ethernet, Bluetooth is wireless USB.

Not Just for Computers.

Part of the power of Bluetooth is that it isn’t just used to connect things to computers — it can be used to connect almost anything to anything else, if both things are Bluetooth-enabled and recognise each other.

Mobile phones, in particular, take advantage of this. Hands-free headsets often use Bluetooth to communicate with the phone. Some cars, for example, now have on-board computers that will connect with a Bluetooth phone and allow you to make hands-free calls, regardless of where the phone is in the car (even if you’ve left it in your bag in the trunk!)

On top of that, of course, Bluetooth devices can communicate with each other. This has led to some people sending messages from their Bluetooth PDAs to others in close range — not an especially useful feature, but quite fun. This is called ‘bluejacking’, and the first recorded instance of it was a man who sent a Bluetooth message to another man’s Nokia phone while they were in a bank together. What did the message say? ‘Buy Ericsson’.

Since then, it has become possible to send images by bluejacking, and it is widely believed to be the newest advertising medium — yes, it lets billboards send messages to your phone, a practice known as ‘bluecasting’. Whether you think that’s cool or annoying, of course, is your choice.

Mustang Convertible Begins Production; Receives Car and Driver’s 10 Best award

The 2005 Ford Mustang Convertible has begun production this week at Ford’s Auto Alliance International (AAI) plant this week. At the Job One Celebration, Car and Driver editor-in-chief Csaba Csere presented the 10Best award to AAI President, Phil Spender. The new Mustang convertible received the Best Muscle Car accolade.

“To succeed today you need a car that’s hitting on all cylinders. It has to deliver style, quality, utility — even if only a little bit — as well as performance and value,” said Csaba Csere, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver magazine. “Mustang does all of that, and that’s why we selected it to our 10Best list as Best Muscle Car for 2005.”

Csere made this statement before Ford employees at the Auto Alliance International (AAI) in Flat Rock, Michigan - the Mustang’s new home. Csere also praised the new Mustang’s quality and reviewed its history dating back to April 17, 1964, when the first model went on sale.

“Back in the ’60s that car cut across demographic bounds,” said Csere. “It was an affordable car, and everyone could buy a Mustang. But you saw a lot of Mustangs in the driveways of very rich people because the car was cool. The new Mustang has the potential for doing that as well. But it has to have a certain level of quality and refinement, and this car has achieved that. After touring the plant this morning I can see how that happened. This is a thoroughly modern facility that totally keeps track of the quality of the car.”

Matt DeMars, vice president of Vehicle Operations, in accepting the award said that, “We’ve known for a long time we had a hit with the 2005 Mustang, and while customer excitement, and recognition like making Car and Driver’s ‘10Best’ confirms what we always knew, it is still very gratifying,”

Compared to other coupe-derived vehicles, the 2005 Mustang Convertible has a more rigid body structure and is more solid. This was achieved by engineering it in tandem with the coupe. The result is the most quiet and solid drop top Mustang has ever produced, according to DeMars.

AAI President Phil Spender said the Mustang would begin shipping to dealers immediately. In addition to the new Mustang Convertible, AAI builds the Mustang Coupe and three body styles of Mazda6. Ford Motor Company invested $700 million in the plant last fall. It is now a flexible facility capable of building half-dozen vehicles on two platforms. AAI houses a new body shop with 380 robots and flexible tooling, as well as an upgraded stamping operation. Major upgrades to the final assembly area include programmable platforms that hold the car’s body on a scissor lift that can be adjusted to the operator’s height making it more ergonomic.

The 2005 Mustang Convertible is but another testament to Ford’s continuing legacy of excellence and innovation in the auto industry. As in all Ford models, a Mustang Convertible will experience automotive technology at its best. This experience is further enhanced by efficient maintenance and preservation. A great and secure way to maintain a vehicle is by installing only excellent quality parts purchased from reputable auto parts stores. In the past looking for a trusted parts supplier takes more tme and effort.

Fortunately, the internet makes shopping for parts a lot easier. There are dozens of sites that offer Ford parts. But a buyer must be cautious when choosing where to buy Ford Parts. It is best if they stick with a trusted and reputable auto parts store such as Parts Train, one of the leading online auto parts stores today. Check out http://www.partstrain.com/ShopByVehicle/FORD and browse their wide selection of proven, high-quality Ford Parts, specifically Ford Mustang Parts.

Magazine Subscriptions Buying Guide

When purchasing magazine subscriptions online expect to save a significant amount off the cover price, but expect to the price offered to be the exact same on all the major sites. Pricing on magazine subscriptions have a fixed minimum price and the vast majority of legitimate retailers will charge exactly that minimum price. Choose the website to purchase from based on features such as additional features (such as available gift cards and renewal reminders) and based on which site you are confident you can trust. Be aware that some sites will automatically charge you for a renewal if they don’t hear from you when it’s time for renewal. If that’s not what you’d like, read the companies policies clearly.

Delivery times

Most publishers use mail processing centers which print address labels for several issues at a time. Labels for new orders are generally not printed until the next run of labels. Additionally, most magazines are printed well in advance of shipping, and each printing is pre-allocated only to the amount of subscribers at the actual time of printing. As a result of this, the magazine industry has a standard “lead time” for subscriptions of 4 to 8 weeks for weekly magazines and 8 to 12 weeks for monthly magazines and quarterly subscriptions although these times do vary by different publication.

If you haven’t received the first issue of your subscription within the expected period times, you can often check the magazine’s web site for your order status.

Ordering for the holidays

Magazines are a popular late holiday gift because the receiver doesn’t expect an issue in-hand at gift giving time. Many magazine subscription websites send a card with gift subscriptions, so there is something to fill the stocking.

The most popular magazine gift ideas for men are men’s magazines and fitness magazines. For women, vacation magazines are the most popular gift and for children, puzzles and animal related magazines top the gift list.

Home: Asset Or Debt Trap

Are you using the equity from your home to purchase everyday things?
This is a dangerous trend growing more popular every month as
millions of Americans tap into the value of their home to fund a
lifestyle.

How many times have you heard the saying “Your home is the best
investment you’ll ever make”? How many times have you also heard that
your home will be the most valuable asset you will ever own?

Both of these are as true, if not truer, today than at any time in
the past. Unfortunately, spend happy Americans are looking at their
home as just another type of ATM, and they are visiting it way to
often. These homeowners are using money borrowed against their house
to finance expensive vacations, new vehicles, even daily visits to
the corner coffee shop.

Our parents wouldn’t think of buying furniture with money borrowed
against their home. So why is this form of borrowing becoming so
popular? Three events have converged to create this dangerous trend.

1. Low interest rates. The past two or three years have seen
interest rates unheard of since the 1950’s. These low rates encourage
people to think they have basically free money to spend however they
want to.

2. Real estate value increases. The Office of Federal Housing
Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) reports that their data shows market
value of the average home increased nearly 13% in 2004. That is more
than any time in the last 25 years. Some areas saw the value of homes
double in less than 5 years.

This increase in value is perceived by some people as being a bonus -
they didn’t have to work for the money, so it doesn’t cost them
anything. They are right about it not costing them anything, except
they forgot that when they borrow money it has to be paid back. That
is when the true cost of the debt appears!

The U.S. Department of Commerce reports in 2003 nearly half of the
$8 trillion in outstanding mortgage debt was in new mortgage
originations. This doesn’t mean home equity loans are necessarily bad
ideas. Using equity in your home to remodel and make additions can
result in solid returns. Even debt consolidation can be a good
choice, provided you have solved the problem that caused the debt in
the first place.

3. Ease of borrowing. Twenty years ago, lenders wouldn’t think of
giving you a loan, even against your home, if it would cause your
equity to become less than 20%. Some insisted in a percentage closer
to 50% equity. Those days are long over.

Today you can go online and find a lender willing to give you a loan
equal to 125% the value of your house! If you have a credit of
repayment, hold a job, and are still breathing you can probably find
a lender willing to let you borrow against your home equity.

The risk created by the convergence of these three factors is the
loss of your safety net. As people buy homes at the top end of their
range and base mortgages on two incomes something has to give.
This “something” has been their savings. Putting aside part of each
paycheck has become the low priority in the pile of demands barraging
a family’s income.

Data released by the Employee Benefit Research Institute reports
nearly 45% of all workers hold assets of less than $25,000 (excluding
their home). Barely 67% of today’s workers are currently saving money
in a 401(k) or some investment program, according to a Thrivent
Financial Survey.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? The looming debt of
mortgage, college, and credit card can seem overwhelming. How can you
tip your financial life back into favoring a secure future for
yourself and family?

Here are five steps to escape the home equity debt trap.

1. Keep track of expenses. Keep a spending record of everything you
spend for one month. The next month, do it again, and the next month
too, until you see areas of spending you can cut back and use that
money to fund your lifestyle goals, i.e. vacation, college, or a new
lawn mower.

2. Create realistic debt reduction goals. List all of your debts
with interest rates, outstanding balances and minimum payments.
Create a plan to pay down the debt, preferably pay the same set
amount each month no matter what the minimums are. Anything extra you
pay should go to the smallest debt first. When a credit card is paid
off, get rid of it. Perhaps a small reward like a special meal when a
goal is reached will help keep you motivated.

3. Preserve your home equity. Having home equity untapped in your
house can provide a level of reassurance. Making wise uses of this
equity will help you to not exhaust it. When you do tap into your
home equity, make sure it is not used to pay for daily living.

4. Pay as little debt interest as possible. Consolidation of debts
into low, or no interest loans i.e. credit cards, is acceptable as
long as no new debt is acquired and you are paying down your debts
each month.

5. Start saving regularly. A fund of money for emergencies will help
avoid debt when life throws you a problem. If you consider saving a
“non-optional” bill each month, you will develop the find habit of
saving. The result is a growing asset base.

The end result of taking these five steps? A minimal-debt life spent
living in an affordable home of your own.

RGM ( Resolution of Great Mysteries )

The most challenging problems ( caused by great mysterious phenomena ) in modern / ultramodern science that could be solved with Superultramodern Science (SS), mainly using the NSTP ( Non - Spatial Thinking Process ) theory. It is important to note that solution to a problem does not mean that it’s supposed to be the absolute solution or something 100 % certain. Nothing, according to the principle of universal doubt, is believed to be absolutely ( i.e. 100 % ) certain.

Part I

The problems whose underlying (mysterious) phenomena are multiple aspects of a singular structure, leading to the NSTP theory. The NSTP theory is the unique theoretical representation of that structure, and thus solves the problems.

Made your Bed, you Better Lie in it!

Many, many people love a camping trip. The great outdoors has a magnetic appeal, but when it comes to the sleeping part that can be a tad uncomfortable. Lying on bone hard ground, or conversely damp grass is not really relaxing. However, a home made solution is very much at hand. It makes sense that lying several feet off the ground should be more comfortable, but there is then the unsteady feeling to contend with. The hammock is the answer as it can be attached to trees, posts, building or other structures as long as they are sturdy enough to support the potential weight of the hammock and it’s occupants. The bonus is that making your own hammock is a lot easier than it first looks. In fact you can make your own hammock in an afternoon and it is relatively inexpensive.

Firstly choose the fabric, with three principles in mind. First, consider the denier of the fabric, this refers to the diameter and weight. Secondly, the thread count - how many fibres are in a specified area. Finally, weight per square yard, this is probably the best gauge as to the strength of the fabric. If you keep in mind all three of these characteristics when you’re making hammocks that will be strong and lasting, you won’t go too far wrong. There are a few thicker fabric weaves that may call for a change to heavy duty needles when making hammocks, but a check of the manufacturers guidelines for the exact specifications on needles to use, will sort this out. Most sewing machines come ready equipped with many grades of needles. When you get to the sewing part of making hammocks, there is no choice when it comes to thread. Use polyester! It’s strong and resists moisture and mildew, plus it absorbs most abrasions. Do not use a cotton thread surrounded by polyester as this will absorb water and delay drying and it can also cause rotting.

Making your own camping equipment is one of the most rewarding aspects of being in the outdoors and can lead to an even more enjoyable trip. Basically all you need is a good hammock design, a few common sewing tips and little bit of patience.

How To Grow Red Oak Trees Near Doylestown, PA

This article is designed for gardeners living near Doylestown Pa.

Planting Red Oak Trees Red Oak Trees. Whenever I think of Red
Oak Trees, I remember hunting when I was a kid and standing near
trees that were giants. Now every Red Oak tree I plant, I can
invision those days in the deep woods and those grand trees and
hope someone else will have that same enjoyment. These trees
will help you too in establish a desired vision to your
landscape.

Beyond their size, Red Oak Trees also fill important ecological
niches. They grow across broad ranges of forest and urban
conditions, finding much of North America to their liking.

Red Oak Trees need protection from deer, disease, insects, and
competing weeds and shrubs. The better your weed control the
better your trees will grow. When seedlings are planted, it best
to plant them with large spacings to allow more light to the
plant. If these trees are planted in shade, they tend to be more
open. Red Oak Trees are used around new construction because
they perform in a wide range of soil conditions. Threse trees
can take wetter soils than most trees and are many time found in
native areas near creek or river banks. If you have compacted
soil from new construction, we suggest smaller trees of 3-5′
height.

All people handling seedlings and small trees need to help with
the life support of your plants. Seedlings are like fish out of
water and need care which is often overlooked between the time
the seedlings are lifted and transplanted. Improper care means
higher mortality. Do not try and reinvent the wheel. You must
protect seedling from moisture and temperature extremes, as well
as physical damage. Seedlings are living and should be handled
carefully. For a higher survival rate, treat trees carefully and
plant them immediately. I like to have a backup plan for
planting if the weather turns bad. I will sometimes switch from
lining out the seedlings to potting them up if I realize that
the soil conditions will not be right for an extended lenght of
time. If planting must be delayed a few days, keep the plants in
a cold, protected place with air circulation between the trees.
Keep the trees out of the rain and wind. To check if the trees
need water, feel the media at the roots.. If it isn’t damp,
water the trees and allow the excess water to drain. In cool,
damp weather, the biggest threat to these trees is from mold.
Try to keep out of soil seedlings moist by either restricting
water loss with a water vapor barrier or by wetting the roots at
regular intervals. While handling or planting try to reduce
temperature and air movement around the seedlings. Windy days
can dry out seedlings so consider waiting for calmer weather.
Once your soil conditions are correct OUR FREE USE PLANTERS will
make planting a snap so its will be worth waiting for good
planting conditions.

HOW TO PLANT

Ideal planting days are cool and cloudy with little or no wind.
If possible, avoid planting on warm, windy days. The soil should
be moist not wet. Care in planting is more important than speed.
Make sure the roots are never allowed to become dry. Bare root
seedlings should be carried in a waterproof bag or bucket with
plenty of moist material packed around the roots to keep them
damp. Ideally, bare root boxes should be kept refrigerated or
packed in ice or snow. Don’t freeze the trees. Competition from
weeds, grass, brush or other trees is very detrimental to
survival and growth of seedlings. Choose areas free from this
competition or clear at least a three-foot square bare spot
before planting. Seedlings should not be planted under the crown
of existing trees, or closer than 6 feet to existing brush.
Avoid areas near walnut trees. Brush aside loose organic
material such as leaves, grass, etc., from the planting spot to
expose mineral soil. If organic matter gets into the planting
hole, it can decompose and leave air spaces. Roots will dry out
when they grow into these spaces. Open up the hole, making sure
the hole is deep enough for the roots to be fully extended. If
roots are curled or bunched up, the tree will not be able to
take up water correctly, will often weaken and die, or may blow
down later due to poor root structure. Take a tree out of your
planting bag or bucket only after a hole is ready. When exposed,
the fine roots can dry out in as little as 30 seconds. Seedling
shoots and roots lose water to air, roots require more
protecting.Unlike leaves ,they do not have stomata (closeable
openings on the surface of the leaves) or any waxy coatings to
help reduce water loss. If the roots apear dry they are probably
dead. Now I know you are thinking,”I will place them in a
buckect of water and store them there until planting”. This will
not work. Submerge plants for no longer that a couple of
minutes. Placing them in water cuts them off from oxygen.
Remember to remove the container before planting a containerized
tree. A helpful hint to all those new gardeners just starting is
to remember to always plant green side up. Hold the seedling in
place in the hole, making sure the roots are straight, fully
extended and that the tree is neither too shallow or too deep in
the hole. Fill hole, allowing soil to fall in around the roots.
Tamp with hands or with your heel. Don’t crush the roots by
jumping up and down around the seedling like there is a snake
curled up around the seedling. It is delicate. Fill with more
soil, if necessary, and tamp. Tamping is important. If soil is
not firmly packed around the roots, there will be air pockets
that can dry out the roots, and the seedlings may be weakly
anchored. It is far easier to plant the tree strait up then have
the tree leaning and have to adjust the tree later. (Addition of
fertilizer and plant vitamins at the time of planting is not
generally necessary.) Take your time in planting. Proper spacing
will help you grow a more valuable crop. I have tried to get
more production from a limited area by over planting and then
thinning, but I always have had trouble in harvesting ….
digging is slower and poor quality usually results for a portion
of the crop. Avoid these tree planting errors:

Tangled roots Planting too shallow Planting too deep Air pockets
Turned up roots (this is called J rooting) Planting trees that
are not tolerant of wet soils in poorly drained areas Planting
over rocks, septic tanks and leach fields, on sand mounds

CARE OF TREES FOLLOWING PLANTING Check periodically to be sure
that brush, grass and other vegetation is kept under control by
mowing, mulching, spraying or a combination of these treatments.
Always obtain advice from a licensed pest control advisor before
using chemicals. You ag extension agency may offer courses in
application of chemicals. Monitoring the appearance of your
trees will help you to detect signs of insects, diseases or
other problems. Apperances also help sell your product. Look for
foliage turning yellow, new foliage drooping or other signs of
poor health. It is easier to take successful corrective action
if the problem is detected early.

Over watering is a common problem in irrigated plantations. You
probably won’t need to water more frequently than every 7-10
days. Give your trees a thorough, deep soak and then let the
soil dry out before the next watering. This encourages the roots
to grow down in search of water. Frequent, shallow watering
encourages root growth near the surface and the trees are more
dependent on irrigation and are less windfirm. Animals can be a
major cause of damage to young trees. Porcupines, gophers, mice,
rabbits, deer and cattle are the most frequent source of damage.
In many states you may have to call your game commission and get
their recomendations on legal methods to protect your crop. In
our state, you can get help from the Pa. Game Commission to kill
deer that are a threat to your seedlings or obtain a free fence
to keep deer away from your seedlings. Over the years we have
lost more trees to mice than any other animal. Put rat baits out
on a regular basis. Over the years we have lost more seedlings
and plants to mice than any other culprit including deer and
rabbits combined. You an see more articles about the care of

Maximum Exposure: Ten Ways To Effectively Increase Your Site’s Prominence On The Web

It’s a strange world, this place we call the internet. Many things here are stark opposites of their real life counterparts. Take for example the following. Whereas blind dating is a most dubious manner of meeting people in real life, it is the norm in cyberspace. Whereas multi-level marketing carries with it a stigma of disaster in the actual world, it is a venture very much sought on the web. And whereas traffic tends to irritate us in our daily existence, online denizens would kill to increase the same for their websites.

Traffic, or the volume of users who visit your site, is what ultimately dictates the success or failure of your enterprise. You may have the best looking site on the planet, offering the most beneficial package for would-be customers, but if no one gets to visit it, all would have been for naught.

Thus, generating traffic for your online business should be of utmost importance. Here are some proven ways in increasing the quantity of users who would visit your site.

1. Use Overture. Overture is a Yahoo subsidiary that offers a very useful keyword suggestion tool that could help you come up with the right keywords. Using the right keywords would rake in more visitors for your site. Simply punch in the words that are related to your products or services, and see how many searches were made for those particular entries. The more searches there are, the more you should consider using those keywords in your site.

2. Submit your site to the many search engines on the web. People who are looking for particular information use search engines to determine their destination. You would want to have your website shown once a search is made.

3. Know the value of keywords. Search engine spiders are sent to fetch the keywords embedded in your site, so it would serve you well if your pages are populated with the right keywords you’ve acquired from Overture.

4. Provide quality content. Populating your site with keywords would be useless if done carelessly. Your visitors would be looking for information, and it would be best to give them that. Otherwise, they’ll just leave as quickly as they came. Remember, you want quality visitors, those who have the highest possibility of purchasing what you have to offer. You have to provide good, informative content for them so that they’ll stay. Try to publish articles or special reports on your site, where your keywords are strategically positioned in the body of your content at a density level of at least 2% (2 mentions of the keywords per 100 words of the body).

5. Consider setting up multiple sites. It has recently been discovered that the number of sites linked to yours influence your search engine ranking. By setting up multiple sites under different domains, and linking them together to form a congruent whole, you will be able to climb up the search engine ladder.

6. Link exchanges. You may also exchange links and/or banners with webmasters who operate a site that is related to yours. This would increase the possibility of cross-jumping visitors who would get exposed to your site and the products or services you offer.

7. Promote in online communities. Join forums, mailing lists, discussion boards and similar gatherings of people online. Most of them would start threads asking for help. Aid them with your field of expertise. Establish connections, and then invite them over to your site. Often, some of these mediums allow you to have a signature where you could put a link to your page, and this would most certainly bring in some visitors as well.

8. Create your own means of inviting past guests to visit your site again. You could build your own mailing list to keep in touch with them and offer some promos from time to time. Or you could incorporate a forum in your website to provide for a venue for your visitors to come together and discuss certain topics. This would simulate the semblance of a community they could call their own, and they would keep visiting your site to join in the discussions.

9. Constantly change your content. Not only will this method win the favor of search engines, this would also increase the possibility of attracting visitors you once lost.

10. Use Adword. Adword is a pay-per-click service that requires you to pay Googles in exchange for a prominent display of your website’s link whenever a search is made that is related to your keywords.

At the early stages of your site’s existence, traffic may come slow. But do not be discouraged into resignation. With the techniques shared in this article, you would increase the flow of visitors in due time, resulting in a high level of activity for your online venture. And with a prosperous site naturally comes a prosperous business.

Self Improvement - Motivation Sometimes Comes From the Most Unlikely Sources

In 1997, Michael Dell of Dell Computers publicly stated that the best thing Apple computers could do to avoid financial failure was to dissolve the company and return the money to the shareholders. Obviously, Steve Jobs saved that message because on Friday 13th, 2006, Mr. Jobs sent an email to all employees sharing how Apple’s shares are now worth more than Dell’s. (Source: New York Times, John Markoff)

The best thing that happened to Apple in the 1997 outside of rehiring its founder was the gauntlet that Dell threw at the feet of Steve Jobs. Coming in as CEO, Jobs had an enormous challenge, but he and his team persevered and accomplished what many in the industry thought impossible.

Motivation is a tricky thing. By its definition, motivate means an inner drive. Yet, so much can quench that inward movement from existing belief systems to outside external forces. To keep that flame of motivation burning brightly within every individual is an ongoing challenge. Occasionally, we may have unintentional help from outside sources as in the case of Mr. Dell’s remarks.

How many times have you been ready to quit, give up and then someone throws a personal challenge or a gauntlet at your feet? All of the sudden you realize that only difference between can’t and can is one simple apostrophe and the letter t. Your thoughts are now full of positive energy that is pumping throughout your body. The childhood story of the Little Red Engine becomes your personal mantra, “Yes, I can, Yes, I can…” Success is now so much more real.

Who knows whether Apple would have surpassed Dell without the false prediction of Michael Dell? What I do know that in working with my small business coaching clients is that everyone can benefit from the likes of those who believe that they can foretell the future. For we all know the future is what we make it to be and not what someone wants it to be.
