Home Schooling over the Internet

In the United States, home schooling is growing. Today, we see this rate moving rapidly, with between 1.3 and 1.7 million children in grades kindergarten to 12 being educated at home by a parent. More and more families are discouraged by the curriculum being presented to the children, finding home schooling a better option. However, home schooling is also used for children that are bullied at school, those that need special attention, or for families that live in remote areas, making traditional school attendance too much of a challenge.

Families that choose to home school their children do not have to rely on public, tax-funded resources, which actually saves taxpayers millions of dollars. However, families that choose to home school, children are reliant on having connection to the internet. This means being able to download studies and tests, and then sending the child’s results into the system for grading. Obviously, having a reliable connection is important. In fact, some home school programs offer the child the option of participating in some classroom time, via the computer.

With broadband service, your child could enjoy all the benefits of being home schooled while still participating in a few class studies if needed. This means you could log on, actually having a real time interaction with other home schooled or public schooled students. With this, your child has the opportunity of developing friends in a classroom setting while still being taught by you.

You can work wirelessly if you like, making the home schooling far more enjoyable. With this, your child can move from room to room, or even sit outside on a sunny day to do homework. As you can imagine, the possibilities are endless.

You can find other home schooled students in your area, allowing friendships to bud. You can also have your child join a group such as a youth development organization. If one does not exist in your area, then create your own. In fact, you could develop a website dedicated to home schooled children just like yours, a place where students can study together, play online games, or simply chat.

The interesting thing about home schooled children is overall, these children score in the upper 80th percentile, which is far higher than children taught in school are scoring. The reason is the one-on-one attention the children receive. In addition, home schooled children enjoy a quiet setting without disruptions and distractions. Knowing you can offer your child everything needed to be a successful home schooled child.

Really? You Don’t Need A Website Disaster And Recovery Program? Why?

If you answered YES to that, you’re dead wrong my friend. Let me prove it to you by giving you real true-to-life examples.

Recently, I asked this question to one lady webmaster named Dorothy and she said quite simply,

“Well, why should I do that? My webhost said that they guarantee 99.9% of the time, my website will be OK. Besides, I don’t know how to do it if that’s technical stuff. So why should I care?”

That is the mindset of many people like her who really believed that the 99+% uptime guarantees found on the promises page of their webhosts is already their website insurance.

First of, what’s a “Disaster and Recovery Program”?

It’s all about a business owner’s plan of actions, systems and procedures that ensures business continuity when disruptions and disasters arise in the normal course of business.

Every major corporations and businesses worldwide have this on their yearly agenda as part of their risk management assessment. It’s also known as the “Business Continuity Program” in the corporate world.

I know your online business and your websites are important to you. So why then should it not apply to your online business as well?

You know that many times, disaster strikes us when we least expect it. Sometimes it even happens when you have a major product launch or a full-blown advertising campaign when, all of a sudden, your websites went down and boom, all your efforts and investments went down the drain as well.

If hackers happen to pick your site for fun and notoriety, managed to break in to deface it or release worms, Trojan horses, DDOS attack bots and the likes that damage your websites as a result, what will you do after?

What about fires in the datacenter where your server is located or maybe a hard disk failure on your web hosting server? There are even cases of errors in technical configurations, substandard server hardwares, overcrowded hosting servers, technical incompetence of support staff and other problems your host wouldn’t tell you about.

These disasters have ruined too many online businesses in the past. And my websites are not spared as well. Believe me when I tell you that it happened to my websites many times even on my own dedicated server! It only shows that disasters do happen and even your webhost sometimes cannot do anything about it.

Website hacking and defacing, viruses and worms, server crashes, server hardware failures, datacenter fires, network failures, electrical faults, technical support errors, long recurring service downtimes and other website disasters can immediately put you out of business. And that’s just one of the effects. Not to mention loss of face, loss of opportunities and loss of time.

Why?

Because downtime is just not acceptable these days. Your customers and visitors can’t wait all the time for you to be back online. If they can’t find you, they can’t buy from or trade with you and going to the competition is easy as a click of a mouse. Your advertising and promotional campaigns are put to waste because of your dead websites. Lots of money are lost in recovery and restoration as well as in lost opportunities that you will surely miss out.

That’s why we all need to make the planning for disaster and recovery a high priority item in our online business especially if you are seriously making a lot of money from it.

By the way, I’m not scaring you at all. But think about it for a moment. Imagine a situation wherein you and your websites are in total chaos, you don’t know what to do because you don’t have a website backup, you don’t have a restoration plan and you don’t really know who to run to or talk to about it.

You see, each webmaster should have a comprehensive plan of action. Your disaster and recovery program should not only target your webpages (html, images, photos, audios, zips and other files). You should know that there are other website components that you need to take care of too.

For example, many websites nowadays have MYSQL databases installed to store and manage their customers, sales, products, files and visitors data among other things. MYSQL is free to use so many people naturally are using it for their website scripts. There is a good chance that you are using or have used it too, right?

So when disaster strikes, not only are your webpages at risk, your precious MYSQL databases are also at risk. Most of the time, webmasters have local backups of the webpages, files and scripts on their hard drive which can be easily restored. But MYSQL databases need a special backup procedure for you to extract it straight from your website control panel. You can’t easily create it and upload it like your html, pdfs and zip files. Your web hosting server creates and grows these databases for you real time. So if you’re not technically inclined to know this as a webmaster, you might disregard it and face the risk of loss in the future. Yet losing your business data is like losing your business continuity. Once it’s lost, you’ll find it hard to recover.

Another website component is your website scripts. They need a disaster and recovery plan too. Say for example you purchased a PHP script that has an auto-install auto-update feature from the seller. Most often than not, you have no copy of this script on your local harddrive (since the seller might have installed it for you for free) much more the version updates that are automatically applied to your website each time the seller releases a new one.

If you fail to backup your whole PHP script configuration, then it will be very hard for you to restore this script to its last state. Imagine getting back to version 1 or older version of your scripts. You’ll end up paying the seller or a top programmer lots of money to restore this for you if you’re even lucky enough to have the script from the seller again for free. If not, you have to pay for it again.

Crazy eh?

What a waste of money just because you don’t have a disaster and recovery plan. Not only that. You will lose face, customers or visitors, momentum, opportunities and most of all, time to recover and restore everything to its last working condition.

You sure wouldn’t want to go back to where you started, would you?

So here are five (5) simple steps you can easily do to setup your own Disaster and Recovery Program for your online businesses:

1. First, REALIZE that your websites and all the other components are always at RISK. If you still believe your webhost that nothing can happen to your website no matter what, you won’t be able to know until you’ve lost everything. I know this and I speak by experience. If you can sleep at night well knowing that as a webmaster, you’re in control, then it really pays to do it yourself. If you’re still not convinced, answer this question: “Would you really put on some stranger’s hands the fate of your online business?” Remember that, most of the time, you’ve never even met or talk to your webhost.

2. Second, BACKUP ALL your website files, scripts and databases on your local hard drive, another remote server or another offsite media. This means you’ll download, store and update these files from time to time. You have to do this patiently on schedule (better once a week or best daily if you have high traffic database-driven websites). You will use these backup files to restore your website to its latest state when disaster strikes. Usually, web hosting control panels like Cpanel, Plesk, Ensim and Webmin have a backup and restore facility page where you can do this. Please check your control panel manual for details.

3. Third, LEARN how TO recover and RESTORE your websites to its latest state. Since your online business is important, you must be able to quickly recover from any disaster. A quick restoration plan should be in place and rehearsed during the “good times” so that when “bad times” come, you’re well prepared for it. Remember, if you know how to build your websites, you must also know how to rebuild it too. This is needed not only during disasters but also if you’re transferring to another web host or web server.

4. Fourth, COLLABORATE, if you’re not a programmer or technically knowledgeable about websites, scripts and MYSQL databases, with someone who has that knowledge. When disaster strikes, you should be able to quickly pull someone who can do the technical stuff for you if you don’t know how. My suggestion is to get someone from Elance.com or Scriptlance.com. Since these sites are working on a project bidding system, you’ll get better service at lesser price. There are risks involved here also but that’s another matter. What’s important is for you to know the places where to get help when you need it.

5. And lastly, STICK WITH YOUR PLAN and do it DILIGENTLY. You can never tell when problems will occur so you have to be ready all the time. And this can only be achieved by being serious to the above four (4) steps.

Remember, this disaster and recovery plan is your own insurance for your online business. You don’t have to pay someone to do it for you. You can do this if you’ll just realize that your online business is always at risk and it’s important that it continue so that you will benefit from it in the long term.

As you become triumphant over any online disasters you will be facing, you will know how good it is to be in total control.

And that, my friend, is a great feeling.

The Vitamin Companies Don’t Want You To Know

Do you ever find yourself asking any or all of these questions:

  • Why do I keep spending money on vitamins and not feel a thing?

  • Why do I still get sick and continuously feel lousy?

  • Why is it so hard to stay “consistent” when it comes to taking vitamins on a regular basis?

  • Which vitamins does MY BODY need?

  • Will I be able to live life to it’s fullest as I get older?

  • How do I know “For Sure” which nutrients I am lacking in my diet?

The “New Scoop” On Vitamins…

Vitamin supplements may be much more important than doctors thought in warding off cancer, heart disease and the ravages of agingand, no, you may not be getting enough of these crucial nutrients in your diet!

Vitamins are a “Key” factor in warding off the following chronic diseases:

  • Heart Disease

  • Lung Cancer

  • Bowel Cancer

  • Breast Cancer

  • Prostate Cancer

  • Osteoporosis

And,

The fact is: YOU probably aren’t getting the nutrients that you need!

World class nutrition experts have been recommending vitamins for more than 35 years!

“To take or not to take” is no longer the question. ALL nutrition experts and most doctors support supplementation.

What To Take Is Now The Question…

Optimal Health Journal lists many government surveys which state:

  1. Our diets do not provide adequate levels of vitamins for AVERAGE HEALTH - let alone OPTIMAL HEALTH!

  2. Of 21,500 people surveyed, NO ONE obtained 100% of the recommended allowance for each of the ten essential nutrients.

The prestigious journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) now recognizes the importance of vitamins. It states:

  • Most Americans do not consume adequate amounts of vitamins by diet alone.

  • it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.”

The “Real Danger” In Overdosing on Vitamin Supplements…

Did you know that your body needs specific amounts of different nutrients and that it can be harmful if you take too much of a certain vitamin?

Can you overdose? In a word - YES!

Overdosing can be more harmful than underdosing! For example:

  1. In high doses, Vitamin C can act as a pro-oxidant causing rather than preventing cellular damage.

  2. Taking too much Calcium can cause constipation and impaired kidney function.

  3. In high doses, Iron can cause an increased risk of heart disease; also poisoning in children who take adult doses.

  4. Zinc, in large amounts can cause gastrointestinal irritation and impaired immune function.

Which Nutrients Does YOUR BODY Really Need?

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to vitamin supplements…

What nutritional supplements should you take? Answer that question, and go to the head of the class. People today are positively boggled by their choices…3,400 different supplements to choose from, at last count. Everyday you hear convincing arguments about why you should take each and every one of them:

  1. To prevent cancer

  2. Heighten immunity

  3. Lower blood pressure

  4. Increase energy

  5. Sharpen memory

  6. Reverse arthritis

  7. Build strong bones

You want all these things, so why not take all these supplements? For one thing, you’d go broke! Beyond that, you don’t need them all! Taking too many might even hurt you! So, back to the question: What supplements should you take?

With all the different products on the market today, how do you really know which vitamin supplements to take? Which ones should you be taking and in which amounts? That is the question…

Even READERS DIGEST is asking: “Which vitamins do you really need?”

Natural Health Magazine goes one step further and asks:

“Are you absorbing enough nutrients?

Their answer: There’s only one sure way to find out…

HAVE YOURSELF TESTED!

Top nutritional doctors use Metametrix Clinical Laboratory for nutritional / metabolic testing…

Which Vitamins Do The “Rich & Famous” Take To Stay Healthy…

The “Rich & Famous” rely upon their excellent health and vibrant looks to earn a living. They spend countless hours exercising, eating right and yes, taking vitamin supplements! The way they choose which vitamins to take is simple, they find out which nutrients their bodies are lacking in and simply take them. How do they do this? They take the comprehensive ION test and have customized vitamins made based on the test results.

This ION test costs a doctor $545.00 which is then passed on to the patient (probably at a higher price).

There is however, a simpler test that is much more cost effective…

A Simple URINE Test

Why Do You Need To Have A Urine Test?

This testing that identifies the Exact Nutrients YOUR BODY must have in three key areas is - the essential first step…You no longer have to guess which nutrients, out of a bewildering variety of “one-size-fits-all” nutritional supplements on store shelves, you should take. Scientific analysis of an overnight urine sample can provide you with the answer to which nutrients your body must have in order to protect your body against cellular damage from uncontrolled free radicals; eliminate harmful toxins in your body; and keep your body’s immune, Vascular and Nervous systems in balance.

Can you afford this kind of testing? Yes, for a cost of just $79.95 you can have this special test.

Your test will identify:

  • Your ability to handle challenges to your body’s antioxidant system

  • The level of nutrients needed to remove toxic substances from your body

  • Your ability to balance KEY compound that influences your important Immune, Nervous, and Cardio-Vascular Systems.

Daily intake of the precise nutritional supplements YOUR BODY needs is the second essential step…When you receive your PrivaTest Analysis and the specific nutrients custom-made to match your body’s needs based on your specific test results, age, and gender, you’ll have in you hands the distillation of years of research on human nutrition, herbal medicine, biochemistry, and metabolic science. At this point in time, you now have the most powerful nutrition tool available to control your health!

What Happens To The Test Results?

Based on your test results, a Custom Blended Formula will be compounded from 48 possible permutations using whichever of 55 KEY NUTRIENTS you may need, in the amounts your body needs…Whatever variety of amino acids, antioxidants, phytonutrients, chelated minerals, or protective herbals your test calls for will be there, carefully balanced to work together to provide what your body’s systems require.

This custom blended formula will then be shipped to you in a 30 day supply of (30 packets of 6 capsules) and all you have to do is take 1 packet per day!

The cost of the Custom Essential Vitamins is only $44.75 per month with no obligation to continue after the first month.

Designer Handbags

With the urban rich adopting the attitude, “have money - will spend,” premium luxury brands are making a beeline for the high-end segment. Ladies are increasingly investing in fashion accessories, particularly designer handbags.

With an increase in disposable income, the potential is enormous. The biggest draw, though, is what the industry terms the image factor. Brand image has different connotations for different people. For young, it’s being “in”; for the upper middle-class segment, it’s creating pockets of wealth in their lives; and for the affluent, it’s an assertion of their class.

“When we establish a physical presence in any country, our target is long-term success, and not immediate returns; but we usually develop a strong customer base within a short time,” comments Prasanna Bhaskar, Retail Manager, Louis Vuitton. “About 300 Suhali Goat Leather Handbags priced at $2,893.96 were dispatched to a burgeoning market like India, but it turned out to be a gross underestimate of the demand; the entire collection sold out within two months.” Bhaskar attributes this to the desire to associate with a well-known, high-end brand.

Another hot seller is a Marc Jacobs Quilted Venetia handbag in vintage-inspired quilted leather. Priced at $1,200.00, the leather is complemented by brass hardware and luxe-suede interiors. The young at heart are snapping up Marc Jacobs Quilted Denim Large Hobo Banana priced at $875.00. Everything about this Italian hobo, from the chunky brass straps to the slant zip pockets, makes it irresistible; the quilted denim is teamed with topstitched leather and signature hardware. Prada Lock Tote is in demand, too, and is characterized by antique leather trim, front flap, signature lock closure, and magnetic-snap front pockets.

Dressing for Senior Success

According to a recent article in the Wall St. Journal a “once hip generation of men has a problem: looking younger and ‘with it’ - but not foolish - as they begin to use their senior discounts.” Entitled “The Baby Boomer Fashion Crisis” the article went on to discuss the fit of clothes, appropriate fabrics, better eye glasses, trendy shoes, clothing colors and hair style tips. In spite of all of that, the article got me thinking about how we present ourselves to the world. What does the image we project say about us?

For instance, I love my jeans and sweatshirt. I can justify this attire almost anywhere. But, it occurs to me, that under some circumstances, others might find it ‘inappropriate’ if not offensive.

I recently visited the Catholic Church where I was a grade school altar boy. I remembered those Sunday mornings: a packed church, men in coats and ties, and women in dresses. Their best dresses. My Mom always wore a hat.

On this particular Sunday morning, the church was only 30% filled. Most of the male attendees sported sweatshirts with the name of their favorite football player printed on the back. Was that sacrilegious? Were they any less devout or strong in their faith than my parents? Were they disrespectful of their religion? I doubt it. I think that standards have changed.

Lest this sound like a justification for sloppy dress, more permissiveness or an ‘anything goes’ attitude let me make the point. As I age, I try to dress appropriately to my surroundings and be groomed. But, truth be told, I don’t think in terms of ‘hip,’ ‘fashionable,’ or ’stylish.’ (Note to my children: no comment.) Most of the time, I no longer care what someone else - anyone else - thinks is stylish. (See previous note.) I lean strongly towards what feels good, perhaps creates pleasant memories and is clean.

Have my standards changed? Or have I, like so many seniors, come to value other things far more than what meets the eye?

Milwaukee Bound - 1967

Milwaukee Bound - 1967
[Fall]

Chris didn’t know it, but the following decade would be one of intolerance: and some growing pains. They lived in the same old neighborhood both Jerry Hines and Chris Wright, only two blocks west and down a block on Jackson Street from one anotherthis was Jerry’s and Betty’s house, just a hop-skip-and-jump one might say to each other’s abode. Across the street from Jerry’s house was Oakland Cemetery. Chris was twenty-years old and Jerry about twenty-nineback then. Jerry being several years older than Chris Wright was available and usable in the sense of travelsomething that was stronger than most anything else in his life for some peculiar reason, something that would stay with him all his life most variably; and so in the summer of l967, Jerry got into a dividing-harsh fight with his girlfriend Betty. Having told Chris about this, they both decided to go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And this is where the story begins.

–Chris had a l960-Plymouth-Valiant [white], it didn’t run all that good but they, He and Jerry figured it would make it to Milwaukee, and so in the middle of the summer of ‘67, hot as a volcano, they loaded his car, when Betty was gone [Betty being his live-in girlfriend at the time], each grabbed what money they had, Chris having about $125.00 and Jerry about $250, and off they went.

As the miles went by on their way to Milwaukee, one right after the other, they kept drinking cans of beer, smoking cigaretteschain smoking for the most part, as the Valiant strolled along the black asphalt interstate [s], making stops along the roadside to go to the bathroom, buying more beer at the nearest gas station, or roadside stop, drinking more beer, making more stops to take a leak: kind of a circular motion to these ongoing events. Matter of fact, they were making so many stops, they both got tired of stopping and started pissing into cans, and whomever was not driving would throw the cans out of window into the fields along the thruway; sometimes just barley missing cars if a good upper wind got hold of it. It was party time all the way, and for the most part, all the time for them two.

Now with loose conversations, the heat coming through the windshield, the breeze hitting their hands as they flopped out the window going down the highway, a bird wasn’t any freer. They lit cigarette after cigarette, talked, laughed, drank and sang. They didn’t do a lot of planning, but enough, –barely enough, but enough, their plan was: they’d sleep in the car until they found an apartment, then get a job, and stay in Milwaukee for a few months, then they could figure on what to do nextnot a big plan or even an elaborate one by any means, but then the world and life was simply for them, and again I say, at least they had a shred of a plan, like a slice from a piece of pie. Their quest, their goal, if you could call it that, was to chum around, that’s what they’d do, and just chum around is what they were doing. Life’s responsibilities or demands were irrelevant, if not cumbersome, and if ever one was caught in a vortex of remoteness, Jerry was, he had enough for the moment of everything in life, yes, in a way he was running away, as Chris was not. Chris was simply running to escape a city he saw too much of, he got the travel bug early in life; he was running to run. No one really knowing where they’d end up, at the end of it all to be exact, and no one putting anymore thought into it past the planning I had already explained: Chris again, was simply available, usable, along with willing, and had an ardent desire to see how far he could go, travel, and the farther the better.

Milwaukee

[The beginning of fall] It was a chilled night, as black as dark-ink, the moon was one-quarter lit, and if there was such things as ghosts, they seem to have been running back and forth across the moon’s light with a grayish robe of a mist. It was a little past midnight when they caught a glimpse of the highway sign that read:

“Milwaukee to the Right, ‘…turn-off 2-miles,”‘ and so Jerry, whom was driving did just that, took the turned-off where the arrow was pointing, whereby, we were on a one-way that lead us directly to the downtown area of Milwaukee. Chris’ face flashed with undeniable excitement, it was as if he was being reborn, his blood was regenerated, there was no logic or reason to it, it was a high: a desire filled, a craving to the top, like an empty cigarette package replenish, akin to getting drunk, a destination-high, a quest, all that and more: save for the fact that the boredom from driving helped turn the moment into a rage of excitement.

“Oh boy, I get to see the city,” he said with anxiety of not being there at that very moment. Jerry gave Chris a more mature chuckle to the fact they had made it. Specifically, about to make it into the city limits their destination.

“Just hang on, we’ll be there in a moment,” said Jerry, turning the wheel a bit to the left, as he was turning onto the entrance to the city: then straightening them out to go directly ahead you could not see lights appearing in the distance, an illumination of dotted-lights. They both smiled, they had almost or nearly gotten to their destinationit was getting closer by the second. Just down and around a bridge or two now.

The one thing they did not take into consideration was the times: it was the 60’s, and neither Chris nor Jerry, could bridge, or even conceive the white and black dilemma that was sweeping the country; for the most part, they were isolated from it. Oh yes it was on TV all the time, but until you are in the mouth of the whale, one never can conceive the depth of the situation, or should I say, the depth of the stomach of the whale. There had been some café, store, and tenant-building damage in the black areas of the City of St. Paul, but not much, not in comparison to the rest of the country. Back in those days, every city had its riots, its racial issues. It was like a plague; but St. Paul, being the conservative city of the Midwest, the City of Culture as it has been called, was almost naive to it. They also lived in a neighborhood that didn’t read books or newspapers all that much or watch the news, it wasn’t a big deal for or to them, only one black family lived in the neighborhood someplaceno one even knew when he had moved in but a few years back might be adequate: the black man had befriended Chris’ grandfather, and therefore was left alone. But no one ever saw a black man in the neighborhood before this, much less deal with riots.

No one came to the Cayuga Street areaor walked through the area without good reason, unless they lived there; for there was a gang of some twenty-two guys and gals that hung out on the church steps. It wasn’t called Donkeyland for nothing; for at one time it was the highest crime related area in St. Paul, and they boasted of that, and the police even tried to avoid them [them being, the whole areathe gang of sorts]; matter of fact, they nick-named it Donkeyland because there were so many hard-heads there: and yes, it suited them. They beat the police up if they chased them up Indians Hill, which was in the center of Cayuga Street, right next to Chris’ house. But as I was about to say,

as they rode down the turnoff, and on-into the city center, a white, a huge white car was following them. Chris first noticed ita ting after they entered the outer rim of the center.

“Something wrong Chris?” said sleepy-eyed Jerry, driving.

Chris turned about for the third time to examine the white car, again seeing the car following them…then all of a sudden said Chris with a crisis voice, a voice trembling, a decadence to his face:

“Oh shit, look, look at what they just pushed out the damn car window, the white carthere…” almost along side of them now, “…looksJ-j-Jerry, a damn shot gun…”

Jerry looked quickly, “What is going on?”

Then out of another window of the car, came a voice from a loud speaker coming right from the white car, you couldn’t make out what exactly was being said thoughso they continued on, Jerry driving closer to the center of the downtown area now, looking at a gathering of people on two differed cornersin a four or five square block area; if anything, it looked like a protest, if not some combat zone; –the voice over the speaker now, indubitably said[even louder than before]:

“Move out of the city’s area, immediately, or we’ll shoot!”

Chris looked at Jerry, “Where’s the way out Chris,” asked Jerry [the word shoot sticking in both their minds like a spider to a fly caught in a web,

“To the right, to the right, over there man…” Chris pointing toward a half lit up bridge: without hesitation, and responsive to his tone of voice, Jerry immediately turned the car southwest, and out they went as fast as that six-cylinder car would go.

In short, both Jerry and Chris’ tempermentaity was shock, disbelief, and spellbound, but somehow they must had caught a sign that said, Madison, Wisconsin, for that is where they headed; and sometime down the highway they had stopped to check the map, and talk about Madison to see if both agreed of the new destination, prior to this stop it would seem they were both ill-balanced.

When they both arrived in Madison, not being able to find a job, they both would end up in Omaha, Nebraska, whereupon, just across the boarder was Counsel Bluffs, where Chris would find a job working for Howard Johnson’s as a dishwasher, and three weeks later Jerry’s girlfriend would show up, and that would be the end of the adventure. She’d stay until the end of the month, and they’d all return back together to Minnesota. It was for Chris the first of many adventuresantiquarian pursuits, and the first real racial confrontation.

Heavens Dilemma

What will we all do?
The Black man,
The White man
The Arab, the Jew:
The Christian,
The Muslim,
Fool, and you.

All tossed together
[Like a load of old shoes],
Waiting to go through:
Through those pure
Pious gates,
Awaiting new souls?

What will we all do?
For it seems [does it not?],

Gates out, Ballmer in

Probably the most famous geek of all, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, has stepped down as the company’s chief architect and passed the keys of responsibilities to CEO Steve Ballmer. Along with the ascension, Ballmer’s new role as Microsoft’s man at the helm is not really one that’s on the proverbial silver platter.

With Bill Gates focusing his time on philanthropy, Ballmer is left with the task to lead Microsoft out of the rut called Vista. Apparently, the latest operating system from Microsoft only garnered negative reviews and people are clamoring for the continued support for Windows XP, its predecessor.

Ballmer needs to act quickly, especially now that Google has developed an alternative to Microsoft Office and Suns Microsystems has launched its own operating system. In simple terms, Ballmer inherited a company with a bleak future, despite the popularity of its name. How he intends to drive Microsoft out of its current predicament is totally in his hands now.

On a lighter note, Bill Gates, who is now relieved of his office duties, has vowed to dedicate his time to pursue his and his wife’s charitable causes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. With a promise to endow to philanthropy 99% of his wealth, Gates is assuring people that serious global problems such as economic poverty, diseases, and social inequities will be the focal points of their philanthropic endeavors.

Hobby Metal Casting & How To Make A Start

I know for a fact that there are many readers of the Hot Metal ezine who are eager to learn how to get started in this fascinating metal craft. For those who don’t know, the hot metal ezine is a free ezine published by: www.myhomefoundry.com. Readers need to absorb all they can about the craft before they become involved with metal casting.

To be successful, it is advantageous to possess basic workshop & metal fabrication skills. You will be building your own equipment and some of the many tools & skills required to fabricate this equipment will include: arc welding - lathe operation - thermal cutting, and the ability to use many other workshop power tools.

Without these skills, the establishment of your hobby foundry will not happen as quickly. But of course you can always use the skills of other people to get the things you need, but there is nothing quite like doing it yourself.

There are many ways you can get around the lack of workshop equipment & skills, one of the best is doing a joint project with a mate or buddy. By combining the different skill sets and talents of two people is one of the best ways to get something like a hobby foundry up and running.

A joint venture will enable you to share: - The skills & the project equipment & building fun-The experimentation-The total learning experience-The spoils of the metal castings when you have your foundry fully operational.

With two people to bounce ideas around, you will quickly find that things will start to happen. By going it alone, the learning will be long & at times quite frustrating because there is no one to turn to for help when you need to.

There is much to learn about metal casting, not to mention the trial and error period, but as they say, experience is a great teacher.

You wont ever learn all there is to know from a single course or book, but the ebooks available from our web site are designed and written to help people make the start, without the huge expense, you will learn how to be resourceful, and to call on many skills to build your own equipment and tools etc.

People who are unfamiliar with metal casting think it is an odd hobby, but they are also very interested to find out more about the hobby, others tend to think it’s just to hot and dirty to get involved in, and that’s fine… no one is going to force anyone to do anything they don’t feel comfortable with.

But metal casting is not that difficult to do once you understand the basic methods & principles, then with a little practice, everything just seems to fall into place. Being able to cast metal opens up a whole new world for any one into restoring old engines, old cars & motorcycles, antique iron or old machines.

The ability to remake worn or broken parts will save a bucket of money, and will quite likely save a lot of time & money over the course of rebuilding & restoring a project. Hobby metal casting as an absorbing and personally rewarding metal craft hobby.

Composers! Eighteen for Twenty Years

If life is like a song,
compose one you won’t mind singing.
If it’s more like a bell,
fashion one you won’t mind ringing!

We’re all composers
in one form or another,
every man and woman
sister or brother.

We weave with the strands
of experience and time,
every thought
or feeling in mind.

We marvel at our lives
and never pause to reflect,
that we are cause
as well as the effect.

When we compose in the light
and not in the dark,
our lives become,
WORK OF ART!

I started getting high when I was only eighteen; it was a hell of lot of fun if you know what I mean. I thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen; my whole life was one happy dream.

But gather round closely, lend me your ears, I was eighteen for twenty years!

My friends and I used to really try, to get high enough to kiss the sky! We tried to reach that special place, Where “all you need is love” would save the race!

We thought if we maintained that lofty state, We’d always be young but made a mistake. Cause the hands of time or the winds of fate; crushed our dreams like a mighty earthquake!

So gather round closely, lend me your ears, I was eighteen for twenty years!

And one day we awoke and the years were gone, Like a bird from its cage they had flown! Time had somehow passed us by, in that fog and illusion we called high!

And now I’m awake but I’m not the same, I have to play catch-up and I’m ashamed! Cause I wasted my time on a chemical high, when fulfilling my dreams, was a better buy!

So gather round closely, lend me your ears, I WAS EIGHTEEN FOR TWENTY YEARS!

College - Student Loans

In this article we’re going to discuss the topic of student loans and what a parent needs to be careful about.

Let’s face it, sometimes your kid just isn’t smart enough or you’re not poor enough to qualify for a scholarship or financial aid. Yet, when it comes time to pay for your kid’s tuition, you just don’t have the money. So what do you do?

In these cases the only recourse, unfortunately, is to apply for a student loan. Well, before you get yourself in over your head, there are things you need to know about student loans now so you’re not surprised later on.

Even if you’re well off, tuition rates are insane. The average yearly tuition for college is now around $25,000 a semester, and that doesn’t include if the student decides to live on campus. That can escalate the cost to close to $40,000 a semester. So we’re talking over $150,000 for a bachelor of arts degree. That’s like buying a small home. And the truth is, next to buying a home, college tuition will be the biggest expense most families will have in their lifetime. The problem with student loans is that if they are not properly planned they can become a total disaster.

The main problem is that most students don’t research the loan they are applying for before they literally sign their life away. The biggest mistake a student makes is when going to the financial aid office of a college they fill out a generic form for a student loan. Never do this just because it is available. You have no idea what kind of loan you’re filing for. You need to research where the loan will be coming from and all other financial institutions to see what the various interest rates are. The school may be giving you an application for a loan that will be between 8 and 12% when you can easily get one for as little as 6%. This will save you a lot of money down the road.

The loans that traditionally have the best interest rates are the Perkins Loans. These are loans with rates that are set by the federal government and are currently at 5%. They are available through your school but usually they will not mention them unless you ask for them. This should be the first loan you apply for before going through the more traditional sources. There are loans that are also designed for certain fields of study, but again these are usually not mentioned unless you ask about them.

Never take a private loan to fund your college. Those loans accrue interest from the minute you sign that document. With loans like a Stafford loan they don’t accrue interest until six months after you have graduated. The government itself pays the interest until you are out of school. Also, do not take cash advances as the interest on them is astronomical, usually over 20%.

The most important thing to know about any student loan, even one through the government is that it’s a loan, not a grant. You MUST pay it back and failure to do so can land you into a lot of trouble. So make sure you have a payment plan worked out so that you don’t end up paying penalties, or worse, end up in jail.
