Mind-Body Secrets for College Success - Six Key Secrets

Embrace the secrets of the body-mind connection and tap into an
inexhaustible supply of power and energy leading to your college
success.
College is a demanding challenge. The role of the
physical
body is key to peak performance. This secret tool allows us to summon
the full measure of our brainpower and talent on demand without
hesitation. Strong study habits and academic discipline are most
productive when performed by a brain and a body well fueled and
precisely tuned. Six key secrets of mind-body performance are nutrition
(do’s and don’ts), hydration, exercise, sleep and true relaxation.

Secret #1…Focused Nutrition_____ Superior brainpower
requires high quality fuel. The brain is fueled by oxygenation, hydration
and proper nutrition, namely carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are
transformed into glycogen within the body, fueling the muscles and the
brain. The brain uses 50% of the body’s available glycogen and even
more when under stress (like during exams). Despite protein’s
reputation as “brain food”, complex carbohydrates are a far superior
fuel. Aim for a mix of 2/3 complex carbohydrates and 1/3 protein in your
meals and snacks. The best strategy to fuel the brain is to begin the day
with a complex carbohydrate rich breakfast and then eat lightly and
nutritiously; ‘grazing’ throughout the day. Be sure to keep the brain well
supplied with another ‘nutrient’: water.

Secret #2…Diet Downfalls_____ Despite the popularity of low-
carb weight-loss plans, one of the largest contributors to poor mental
performance is a diet low in complex carbohydrates. Yet, avoiding
certain types of food supports high-level brain functioning. Sugary, fatty,
and many protein heavy foods are poor quality brain fuel. Sugar
increases anxiety while providing a jittery, scattered rush of energy,
followed by a dramatic crash in energy, thinking ability and sometimes
mood. Fats and protein slow the brain and create foggy thinking. It is
much better to save the cheeseburger or steak until after the exam or
power-study session.

Secret #3…Ample Hydration_____ Proper hydration is another
secret component to boosting brainpower. Brain tissue itself is 85%
water, and the brain is quite sensitive to dehydration. Ample hydration
allows the brain to function most efficiently, much like grease on gears.
Conversely, dehydration slows the brain and is a major factor in fatigue.
Reach for a tall glass of spring water rather than a caffeinated beverage,
as it will serve you better as a student needing energy and focus.
Conservative and judicious use of caffeine can be a useful study aid, but
more often it is overused or abused and has an overall negative effect
on performance. Be aware that coffee is especially dehydrating. For
maximum benefit drink 48-64 ounces of water per day. The benefits
extend far beyond boosting your brainpower to support the health of
your entire being.

Secret #4…Essential Exercise_____ Exercise nourishes the
brain with oxygen while cleansing the body of performance damaging
chemicals. Exercise relieves the body of stress and it’s by-products to
create clearer, more creative thinking. Exercise trains the body to handle
stress as well as aiding in recovering from stress. Stress itself is not bad.
Stress creates growth (mental, physical and emotional), yet the growth
occurs during a recovery period. Exercise addresses both sides of this
equation; it can relax as well as increase stress capacity. This is
especially true when the form of exercise is carefully chosen to create a
specific effect. For example, a kickbox-aerobics class or long run may be
the best choice when you feel dull and sluggish or frustrated and
irritable. Yoga, Chi Gung or a nature walk help soothe nerves and re-
focus the mind when you feel pressured or anxious. There is a
physiology to our emotions and it is well established that we learn and
perform better when we feel good. Exercise is a major key to peak
performance that powerfully supports academic and personal success
both in college and in life.

Secret #5…Quality Sleep_____ We underestimate the
importance of quality sleep and true relaxation on our success.
However, it is essential. We need at least seven hours sleep for peak
performance. Naps are great, but not as a substitute for regular sleep.
Studies actually show that “early to bed, early to rise” really does create
success. This may be quite a challenge at school, but keep it in mind.

Secret #6…Deep Relaxation_____ College success can be
derailed by the wrong kind of relaxation. While socializing and ‘partying’
has it’s traditional place in college life, they do not fulfill the
requirements of “deep relaxation.” Highly personal, develop your own
repertoire of spirit-feeding, body-soothing activities like nature walks,
playing an instrument, inspirational reading, deep breathing exercises,
star-gazing, meditating or yoga practice. Eventually you will be able to
precisely read your body’s signals and take meaningful action to
enhance your talents and abilities despite any outer stress or
circumstance.

Most advice about achieving college success is centered on developing
excellent study habits. While academic discipline and strong study
habits are indisputably key factors in college success, there is a
powerful ’secret tool’ at work at the very foundation of all our efforts.
Achieving meaningful success at college, both academically and
personally, requires a holistic approach. All mental and emotional
strategies we may employ are deeply affected by our core foundation:
the physical body.

Do You Ride Like A Duck?

If you’re looking for a good time riding on gravel roads there are a few strategies that can make your experience a whole lot more fun! Always remember to drive in one gear lower than you normally would, as this allows for minor adjustments in your throttle. It will also take over some of the braking duties without your need to change gears all the time. Remember to stay smooth and fluid with your motions. This is especially important when driving on gravel, dirt and uneven roads. If you stand up on your pegs a lot, remember to use your legs as shock absorbers as this will give you the added advantage of lowering the center of gravity directly to the pegs instead of your seat. Don’t paddle walk your bike as this throws it back and forth, and undermines any benefits gained from centrifugal force established through forward motion.

A simple law of science says when a body is in motion it tends to stay in motion. As long as you stay on the throttle your bike will stay up. If you do a bit of a hill climbing, remember to lean forward. This works especially well when you’re standing on the pegs. When going downhill shift your weight backwards towards the rear of the bike.

Remember to shift your body weight when rounding curves as this will help you utilize far more subtle adjustments to your steering. Overall you are going to get a more stable feeling when you apply subtle, smooth adjustments in steering. For your first gravel drive, find a smooth road and you will have more confidence in your skills. Remember there are always roads under construction and using a bit of common sense goes a long way when it comes to gravel road driving!

Software Review: Xsitepro Total Site Management Software

It’s not very often I get excited about a software program, but today I’m so excited I just had to tell you about Xsitepro, the top tool for Internet marketers. In particular, those who have been using HTML applications programs like Dreamweaver and Frontpage to produce their Internet media will find this program revolutionary in that it can at least halve your time for site development.

In 1996 while studying a Master’s degree in multimedia and online learning I learnt about HTML which seemed like a backward step after using and teaching word processing and programming in Pascal and DBIII+ (do you remember these?). MS Word and Wordperfect, even Multimate, were light years ahead of this HTML stuff. I remembered wondering why on earth anyone would design a programming language so simple and so time consuming to format. Shortly after, I was to find out why it was kept simple and I stumbled across Dreamweaver and Frontpage HTML generators. For years I’ve used both programs to produce my HTML email templates and Internet site pages.

I’ve become fairly proficient using either, but as I have a preference for Dreamweaver, I’ve used that most often. In fact, just during the last few weeks I upgraded my site adding additional links, changing the banner heading, putting in some jump menus and generally making it more user friendly. Just after I finished a colleague brought my attention to the most innovative, useful, purpose-built software for Internet marketers I have ever seen - Xsitepro. And I’ve seen and purchased dozens.

After reading every word of the sales blurb and watching the on site video “7 Reasons Why You Need Xsitepro”, I decided I had to get a copy. As I usually do, I give software a good test run before the trial period or guarantee runs out and if it’s not suitable I uninstall it and request a refund.

No refund here. Xsitepro was easy to download and installed without a hitch. It comes with an excellent tutorial and an extensive user manual in Adobe PDF format, both of which are accessible from the Help menu. After working through the short tutorial, which steps you through building a site for an optometrist’s store, it was very simple to get the program up and running. The user interface consists of tabs in a logical arrangement from left to right; start a project, enter the website description and keywords, project name, copyright information and any notes and click the next tab headed ‘Page Layout’. Here, as the name suggests, you set up your standard page layout dimensions, graphics, menu and other features. It’s a cinch.

In the next tab, ‘Web Pages’ you enter your content in much the same way as you use a word processor - it’s all what-you-see-is-what-you-get (wysiwyg) and very easy … point and click for font sizes, to embolden, underline and so on.

Now, I have to tell you, I was blown away by the sheer common sense concept behind this program (Why didn’t I think of it?). It does almost everything an Internet marketer could want quickly, efficiently and professionally. If, like me, you are creating several sites selling different products or services and you intend to create numbers of additional sites, this is a product that will save you so much time you’ll wonder what to do with yourself.

Some of the excellent time-saving features included in Xsitepro are:

  1. An affiliate link storage facility so that when you want to place an affiliate link you just right click and select and bingo, the link is in place
  2. Point and click to install Google Adsense advertisement codes
  3. Automatically break a long page into multiple pages and place navigation
  4. Install a breadcrumb menu (obviously named after the Hansel and Gretel fable) that shows users where they are eg, Home -> Services -> Tooth Pulling and allows them to click on links to return to previous pages
  5. Automatically create site maps in alphabetical or hierarchical view or links pages
  6. Search engine optimization
  7. Templates for articles, sales and product pages

… and much, much more.

This program has you creating multiple sites within hours and publishing them using the FTP interface included. All of the graphics and associated files are placed in a folder so you don’t have to hunt for them later.

On the downside, if there is one, it takes a while to adapt to the way of working in Xsitepro. For example, working in tables in Xsitepro is quite different from working in tables with Dreamweaver. But, when you work out the differences you can move along quickly building, resizing, placing borders, colouring and inserting or deleting tables. The program has excellent flexibility and nothing has been missed.

I was disappointed with the number of typos and other errors in the manual which were more numerous than I would have expected of such an excellent program, but it didn’t detract from the instructional value of the content and is something that will no doubt be rectified in a future upgrade. It had all the appearances of being rushed together to meet a publishing deadline.

The price for Xsitepro surprised me by being much lower than I thought could reasonably be charged for such a top application. And with the price come numbers of free upgrades.

If you are doing what many Internet marketers are - including me - and building multiple streams of income using stand-alone themed sites, Xsitepro will be the best investment you could make to build and grow your business.

This is a once-in-a-million software program that is set to change the face of Internet marketing. The concept is both brilliant and remarkably simple.

Motorcycle Tires Q & A

Here are few of the frequently asked questions about tires:

1. Why are new tires better?

First, new tires are better because it is organic and it decomposes. Second because the older the tire gets, the more it is exposed to outgassing. Outgassing makes the tire brittle.

2. What’s the right tire age?

In essence, the principle is the newer the tire the better. However, to make a tire last longer the tire’s age is of lesser importance. But be careful not to buy tires which are over six or seven years old. You will be able to know their date of manufacturing by searching for the three or four-digit number stamped in the tire’s sidewall. For instance, 2101 stands for 21st week of 2001 - which is its manufacturing date.

3. What are size and pressure?

Run the bike in the recommended tire pressure. It is so simple. You just have to stick to the manufacturers guidelines. That is the safest and the best thing that you can do. Nevertheless, you can have some deviations depending on your desired performance. Moreover, you have to check tire pressure regularly.

4. What will I do in case of a flat tire?

Motorcycle tires swerve from more directions. Unlike car tires, motorcycle tire has only the other tire to prevent it from falling. Thus, the best thing to do in case of a flat tire is to replace it and not just plug it.

5. When is there a need for replacement?

It depends. Front tires may still shot even when there is still ample rubber. In fact, they may still look good even if they have gone through considerable heat cycles. They can also cup or scallop when already having uneven surface. This is the best time to replace them.

6. When to buy a tire?

Buying tires must be made at reputable motorcycle stores. These stores have already established their names and services. You can also order online. But this remedy is a gamble because it will not guarantee that you will be getting newly manufactured tires. When you buy tires personally, you have the opportunity to choose the freshest tire in the store. You also have the chance to compare prices and quality.

Road Bikes Reviews: The Giro D’italia Is The Italy’s Answer To The Tour De France

The Giro d’Italia has a fine history behind it, like the Tour de France it was started to publicise a newspaper, just like the Tour de France the organisers made the leaders jersey the same colour as the paper, yellow in France from the L’Auto newspaper and pink in Italy from the La Gazzetta dello Sport. The first Giro was in 1909 and was 2448 kilometres long (the shortest), split into 8 stages and was won by the Italian rider Luigi Ganna, 127 riders started in Milan, but by the finish, also in Milan, there was only 49 left, this was not the worst edition, in 1914 only 8 out of the 81 starters managed the full distance.

The winners.

Just like the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espaa, the Giro d’Italia always has a deserving winner, three riders have won it five times, Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi of Italy and the great Belgian, Eddy Merckx, Merckx of course also won the Tour de France five times and the Vuelta once. There have been many other “stars” who have won the Giro over the years, French heroes Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault and from Spain Miguel Indurain have all one 5 Tours de France and the Giro more than once. The home riders have obviously been the big winners, Felice Gimondi, Gino Bartoli, Ivan Gotti, Gilberto Simoni and Paolo Savoldelli have all shown there winning ways, but the battles between Giuseppe Saronni and Francesco Moser in the 80’s are epic. The strangest rider to have taken part in the Giro d’Italia would be Alfonsina Morini Strada who is the only woman to have ridden the race, and finish!

The race itself.

The Giro has started outside of Italy on eight occasions, the furthest away being either Belgium, Greece or possibly the Dutch town of Groningen, which hosted the opening individual time trial in 2002. When the race is on Italian soil the main difficulties are usually the Alps, Dolomites and the Apennines, the Giro is in May so the big climbs can get dreadful weather, snow, rain and cold temperatures can shape the race and determine the winner.

The future of the Giro d’Italia.

The future of the Giro d’Italia looks good, since the UCI (cycling’s governing body) brought in the Pro-Tour all the top 20 teams have to ride the race, before they would only get all the Italian teams and a few foreign teams with sponsor interests in Italy, now the race is also shown free on television, where as before it could only be seen on a private station. The 2005 edition was one of the best for years, top teams, top riders and a hard course brought the race to life, for years the Giro had become a procession until the last hour, then the sprinters took over. The climbers had some good hard stages and the team leaders would do there work for the overall on the hills or the time trial, and that was it, now its one of the most exciting stage races there is from begging to end.

Visiting Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a high rise city with a complete focus on tourism and trading; two things that have grown along with the city in the past decades. It is indeed one of the most beautiful and busiest cities in Europe, and hence it is quite difficult to get a hotel room at your wish upon arrival. Cheap hotels in Amsterdam are in abundance, but most of them are always fully booked all year round, except perhaps for a few days out. With a good range of modest offerings, most cheap hotels in Amsterdam are quite famous for their hospitality, which in turn is definitely not compromised in any way with the price. Most of them are available online for reservation, and in fact the best deals for cheap hotels in Amsterdam are largely found online as well. Unbeatable discounts are also equally offered all around, and in terms of these discounted packages, you pay less but lose nothing out of the normal offerings.

When hotels are cheap in Amsterdam , traveling within and to the city would unquestionably be cheap as well. There are thousands of cheap airline tickets to Amsterdam sold every year in the US, and most of them are grabbed away within matter of split seconds. Cheap airline tickets to beautiful cities are always high in demand, likewise predictable in this case of Amsterdam as well. In respect of that, it’s always advisable to book tickets early, regardless of when you’re going; and in fact it’s reasonably better to reserve your tickets at least a few months ahead. There are also various travel agencies nationwide offering cheap airline tickets tied to hotel packages in Amsterdam, and if you’re lucky enough, you might even get discounts up to 80% in some instances.

Necessary Mountain Biking Equipment

Being prepared while out on the mountain bike trail is an absolute must and a great rule of thumb is to always pack more mountain biking equipment the farther away from help you plan to be. There are a few important considerations you should also make regardless of the skill level of mountain biking that you plan to partake in.

The first consideration, for anyone planning on being active outdoors regardless of mountain biking or not, should be to have a well stocked first aid kit. You can purchase biker specific first aid kits, that are purposefully designed to fit nicely in a small pack, under the seat or even in saddlebags. A well stocked first aid kit will contain antiseptic, pain reliever, tensor bandages, band-aids, moleskin, and tweezers.

The second necessity is to have a mountain bike specific tool kit and there many options available as to the type of bike you have and the tools you want it to contain. The very basic tool kit should have the required tools needed to repair a flat tire and will fit nicely under your seat or in a saddlebag. Other tools to look for are an Allan key or small wrench, a chain breaker, a tire gauge, a Swiss army knife, and some strong tape.

Another highly recommended piece of mountain biking equipment to include is a spare mountain bike chain. Any experienced bikers know all to well how easy it is to bust a chain on the trail and the headache it can cause. Often a broken chain can be repaired but do not take the risk of being left without one.

Last but definitely not least is a portable air pump. These pumps come in numerous shapes and sizes and can be purchased specifically to fit your bike. Most can fit under the seat or in saddlebags, and often the repair kit includes one.

All these pieces of equipment are designed to be light weight and easily stored on your bike. Never risk traveling far from help without then because being prepared with the right mountain biking equipment can save you many hours of frustration.
