Numerous managers believe that, by giving each staff member some education in safety in the workplace, they are well equipped to manage any situation. In reality though, employees should have far more than a basic education in health & safety regulatory affairs. You need to provide your employees with a competent supervisor, the appropriate equipment, and last but not least regular practice.

A supervisor has an even bigger purpose to play than simply managing the work environment. Your choice of supervisor must see their health & safety training as important and be able to get other people excited. In addition to encouraging conformity with health & safety legislation, the person supervising furthermore must make certain that employees perform every task to the best of their abilty. Naturally it isn’t easy to achieve all this at once. In depth industry knowledge is a must for a supervisory role as well as a high level of understanding of safety legislation, risk assessment, and first aid.

It’s just not sufficient to merely send any staff to a health & safety course. To successfully discover a hazardous area they must have to put their newly accquired knowledge into practise.
