BT’s New Broadband Plan Suffers a Setback from Muswell Hill Residents

In an unforeseen turn of events, BT’s plan to launch its advanced high-speed broadband network using optic fibres has been halted by the London Borough of Haringey, as Muswell Hill residents protested against the installation of tall cabinets on the pathways.

The residents believed that the cabinets would create problems not just in opening of doors of parked cars but also in free movement of pedestrians. There were other concerns as well, including that the cabinets were being installed without prior approval of the authorities, as disclosed by the spokesperson of Haringey council.

The trial was to be conducted in Muswell Hill area as well as Whitchurch in Cardiff. However, due to protests of residents and their appeal against the cabinets, work has been stalled in Muswell Hill. According to John Crompton, treasurer of the Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association, the cabinets are higher than typical garden walls and would have been troublesome for the neighbouring residents.

As a result of the protests and the stay order, BT has decided to decrease the size of cabinets substantially, but this process might take a long time. In the meantime, BT might think of expanding the trial to other areas of the country like Edinburgh, Manchester or Glasgow.

Online Pirates Could Face Broadband Throttling

Culture secretary Andy Burnham recently made a crucial speech at Music Week’s Make Online Music Pay conference, where he stated that the government is looking at technical solutions to deter pirates from accessing copyrighted material via the internet.

The Digital Britain report, to be released on the 16th of June, was earlier expected to mention a legal stance, which would have translated into a ‘three offences and you are out’ strategy to bring online pirates to book. That suggestion may no longer be there when the report is launched a few weeks from now.

Though the suggestion that ISPs should send letters to those who breach copyright laws may still be implemented, actively limiting file sharing on the net may also be insisted upon. To restrict the amount of file sharing taking place on the internet, it is being advised that ISPs should throttle the active broadband connections of those customers who are suspected of being involved in flouting copyright rules. For broadband advice, a dedicated site like Broadband Genie is a good place to look, the broadband blog and articles offer a good insight into the various ISP’s practices.

A few weeks before the report comes out, positive response is coming in on Burnham’s recent comment. Vice president of Forrester research, Mark Mulligan, told the BBC that since ISPs already employ technical solutions to handle their prime time traffic, they need not spend extra to install any new technical infrastructure. However, he did have some doubts on how ISPs would take the suggestion and how music labels and ISPs would work at finding a middle ground.

Music Download Tax for Isle of Man Residents

The plan for a compulsory Internet tax for the residents of the Isle of Man was announced some time back. Further details are now coming into the public domain and it seems the plan could face some obstacles before it becomes a reality.

The new scheme proposes to tax any resident of the Isle of Man who has acces sto an internet service (not just broadband). The tax would be £1 per month and would be added to the fees being paid for the internet service. All ISPs operating on the Isle of Man would be asked to install hardware that can record P2P and other network data to keep track of music being downloaded from these sources. Based on the data recorded by the ISPs, the collected revenue would then be distributed to the artists as compensation for the downloaded music as well as to the ISPs as a reimbursement for managing the service. For the users this would mean that they will not have to worry about the legality of their music downloads and would be able to share the music freely with others via P2P software.

However, all is not rosy about the plan and a key issue likely to be raised is the infringement of user privacy by the ISPs’ monitoring of the network. Businesses could also raise an objection as they would have to pay the new tax despite the fact the most of them have nothing to do with illegal music downloads. Furthermore, the plan is also silent about how other forms of copyrighted content such as videos and software would be treated under the new arrangement.

New Years Resolutions

Yep. You read that right. And I’m late and I’m not sorry and you’ll know why by the end of this column!

Typically, in late December and early January people in our culture take stock of our lives, make momentous decisions and decide to ‘get it together.’ There’s something about the turn of the calendar that gives us hope about making our lives and our attitudes shiny and new. However, this year, instead of the usual goals and New Year’s resolutions (like ‘I want to lose 100 pounds in five weeks’ or ‘make a million dollars by next Saturday’) I think I have found a new and better approach. It seems a bit radical but might make the coming year more meaningful.

This year, I started from the position that I first need to separate what’s important in my life from the non-essentials. While in some respects it felt selfish, it also forced me to take responsibility for my values and priorities. And, I decided that I could review, revisit, update or start over on any day I so choose!

Here’s my starter kit:

• Keep learning. Perhaps a new adventure like crafts, a new language, or playing an instrument.

• Laugh a lot more, ‘live on the wild side’ and do it out loud. Celebrate.

• Surround myself with the things I love even if my family continues to roll their eyes when they spy the mushy Father’s Day card framed and hanging on the wall. They keep me grateful and humble.

• Accept the times that require tears and grieving. Participate fully and then move on. Give thanks.

So, I didn’t get my New Year’s Resolution column submitted in December. Celebration trumps procrastination. What’s your inventory of resolutions?

Have You Invited A Spy Into Your Computer?

Yes, it’s true. You may have inadvertently invited a spy into your computer. This spy is known as “spyware, adware, or trojans”, and once it is in your computer it starts taking statistical information as you travel the Internet. In some cases, it may send you pop-up ads and slow down your computer. A wired.com article, mentions it “could even collect your credit card information”.

How did you invite the spy?

Maybe you visited a website you knew and enjoyed only to find that it was recently purchased by a pornography site. The new company has imbedded “spyware” into the home page and now, in many cases without your knowledge, it is on your computer.

Maybe you downloaded a free or paid program and as part of the package you were provided with an added secret bonus - a “spyware” program. Spyware may also be placed on CD’s you purchase, too.

Maybe you agreed to it! You could have downloaded a program and checked the box to allow the program to take statistics from you “for their own use”.

Maybe someone sent you spam, especially porn spam, and that spam created the spy. Spys can easily be placed, without your knowledge, in pictures or HTML email.

What you can do?

Purchase a firewall program and it should let you know if a program is about to download from the website you are at. Note the word “should”.

Or you can learn all about spyware, download an anti-spyware program, and schedule time in your weekly calendar to run an anti-spyware program. The first time I conducted a “clean up”, on my 18-month old computer, I found 2 porn and 42 other spyware programs. Then a week later, I had 4 new spyware files appear.

To further reduce the amount of spyware that ends up in your e-mail Inbox, create a “rule” or “filter” that will move any e-mail containing “certain adult words of your choosing” directly to your delete or spam folder.

Norton and MacAfee the virus protection specialists, have added anti-spy programs to the list of maintenance programs they sell. However, according to information I’ve seen on email lists, they’re not as anywhere as good as the Ad-aware program from Lavasoft.

Just a note: If a few people use your computer and each has their own log in password, when you run LavaSoft program, you need to run it under each password. Example: Let’s say Katie and Molly have passwords on your computer. Log in as Katie and run Lava Soft. Then log out of Katie, and log in as Molly and “run the program again.” I’m sure, you’ll find additional spys under each log in name - just like I did last weekend when I cleaned and updated a friend’s computer.

Six Sigma Deployment In Smaller Organizations

Six Sigma is not just for large multinational corporations. While there are difficulties inherent in implementing Six Sigma in a small company rather than a large business they can be overcome. Six Sigma can work in any size business because the nature of Six Sigma is dependent upon characteristics inherent in any business, not on the size of a business. Smaller organizations frequently are short on resources and expertise in change initiatives. However, they also have more flexible process flows, a shorter decision-making chain, and higher visibility of senior management. Smaller organizations can actually effectively establish Six Sigma faster than large businesses if deployment scope is correctly managed.

Scope of Deployment

Six Sigma is designed for all-inclusive deployment across an organization. However, s maller organizations do have constraints that limit their ability to initiate a large scale Six Sigma implementation. If your organization does not have the resources to create an infrastructure for organization-wide Six Sigma deployment then start with a pilot program.

One of the beauties of Six Sigma is that its central methodology is scalable. Six Sigma, emphasizes intensive training and extensive analysisqualitative characteristics that work regardless of the size of the organization. Likewise, Six Sigma DMAIC (design, measure, analyze, improve, and control) discipline s work no matter the size of the organization or even the size of the Six Sigma project. Even a small Six Sigma project can yield significant results. Breakthrough improvements in processes and bottom-line profitability come not from quantity of resources, but the quality and the intelligence with which they are employed.

Small and medium-sized organizations may not have the resources of larger companies; however, in most cases, smaller organizations can be more nimble, flexible, and focused on results. Approaching initial implementation of Six Sigma through a pilot program will yield tangible results without overwhelming your resources from a small “quick-hit” project. These results can then be replicated throughout the organization, in many cases even faster than in a large organization.

Issues Critical to Smaller Organizations

When deploying a pilot Six Sigma project there are several important issues to consider inherent to smaller organizations. First, the choice of a project is critical. The pilot project will set the tone for Six Sigma deployment, so it should be a good one that can show significant and visible results in a reasonably short period of time. The project must clearly address one or more business goals thereby contributing to one or more core enterprise measures. Each project must also be completable within three to four months, so careful upfront scoping is essential. Projects must be continually tracked and updated for line management during existing business reviews.

Another issue is training. In smaller organizations, training budgets and especially time available to devote personnel for training is limited. Thus, it is not always practical for personnel to be absent from their day-to-day duties to attend months of training. Fortunately, there are some Six Sigma consultants who can deliver required Six Sigma training in an accelerated format and even onsite. Thus, smaller organizations can give their people the needed training with less disruption to their normal business, improving internal synergy while providing greater organizational flexibility.

Six Sigma implementation teams can encounter critical resource restrictions, often due to a personnel limitation where people are available for project functions only on a part-time basis. It is essential at project inception that the right people are involved, doing the right things. A small but committed force of the right people with proper training, given the proper authority will go far in getting things started. Good and fluid communication is also critical.

Upon successful completion of the Six Sigma pilot, the scale of the deployment is then expanded to other areas of the organization, incorporating the lessons learned from the pilot project. Just as it is much harder for a large ship to turn than a small ship, smaller organizations can change and adapt more quickly than large organizations. That does not mean that small organizations will automatically be successful when deploying Six Sigma, but making change take place and getting buy in to the changes are easier.

Tuning the Music Therapist

Music so strongly evokes emotional responses that it is being more frequently employed in the context of psychotherapy as a powerful healing modality. As a novice in this field I inquired at a recent conference on music therapy as to how this tool effects healing in clients with emotional disorders.

Conceptually, it is my understanding that the music therapist often employs musical improvisation to communicate with the unconscious aspects of the patient’s psyche. The therapist may set out to convey an empathic or supportive intention with the use of a musical language that communicates at an emotional rather than verbal level. The intention of the therapist may be completely informed by what she/he “thinks” the patient needs for his/her healing i.e. a unidirectional healing intention. Alternately, it may be more dynamically informed.

In the latter case, the therapist’s intention is informed dynamically through her/his empathic attunement to the patient’s emotional state as the musical dialogue unfolds. In such a case the emotional quality of the music may evolve as the therapist and patient interact through the musical medium.

Ideally in a genuine healing situation it is expected that the therapist will evoke in the patient an emotional state that brings with it greater internal harmony associated with such feelings as relaxation, peace, joyfulness, contentment, and a sense of light heartedness. This feeling of harmony, from an energy psychology paradigm, is associated with an ordered and sustaining bio-field of energy that supports both structure and function of the body at all levels.

Metaphorically, the therapist could be seen to be helping the patient “tune” him/her self to an optimal bio-energetic field of frequencies that then spontaneously effect healing. To say that the therapist is directly doing the healing would be difficult to justify as the therapist couldn’t possibly know how to direct the multitude of biochemical reactions necessary for healing to occur. She/he however may be facilitating the re-establishment of a healing bio-energetic field within and around the patient that itself orchestrates the biochemical re-organization.

If we extend the use of this metaphor, the therapist could be considered as a tuning device, similar to that required to tune a musical instrument. Hence we can speak of the therapist as the tuner for the patient’s bio-energy field.

It becomes obvious then that if a tuning device is itself out of tune the musical instrument to be tuned will be out of key, no matter how well the musician’s technique.

In the same way, if the music therapist who is helping to facilitate a realignment of the patient’s bio-energy field is “out of tune” this will not only limit the healing process but could also potentially be harmful for the patient. It becomes imperative then that the music therapist, apart from being a skilled musician, also undergoes an internal bio-energetic realignment or retuning.

What will the therapist use as a tuning device however? In order to answer this question we must reflect on what it means to be in tune. As we alluded to earlier, when the patient is in harmony he/she feels relaxed, peaceful, joyful, contented, and lighthearted. We also notice that in such a state, stress is reduced and physical and emotional resilience is enhanced. This is clearly a state in which healing is optimally supported and might therefore be accepted as a state of optimal tuning of the bio-energetic field.

Unfortunately, music alone cannot effect such an optimal state of tuning. If it could we wouldn’t need the presence of the music therapist in the therapeutic situation. Hence, in the same way the music therapist cannot rely on music alone for the realignment of their own bio-energetic field. We are therefore left with a slight conundrum. In order to address this it becomes necessary to ask: where does the internal source of harmony that is represented by the feeling state mentioned above, originate within an individual.

We note that his feeling state of harmony can be rapidly evoked when one actively appreciates something they like about themselves. Through the action of self appreciation one can spontaneously begin to feel joyful, relaxed, peaceful, contented and lighthearted, among other feelings. These feelings are also felt most intensely over the region of the person’s heart.

Since it is the person themselves that is actively doing the appreciating the feelings of appreciation are clearly emerging from that person’s Self. As the feelings of appreciation are most intensely felt over the heart region, then it follows that that person’s experience of themselves originates in the heart region. Ironically, most individuals however tend to “think” of themselves as originating in the mind or brain. In other words they think they are somewhere where they are not. Their heart, i.e. their Self, is left forgotten and abandoned.

The mind and the beliefs that flow through it become the organizing bio-energy field that then tries to sustain the body in its daily functioning. However, because the mind is not the Self it does not have the necessary information to adequately sustain the physical/emotional body. This is obvious because none of us is capable of consciously knowing how to orchestrate the multitude of biochemical processes in our bodies. In most cases we are not even aware of what they are.

As a result the individual does not feel in a state of harmony i.e. they feel stressed. It is only when the heart is re-instated as the center of that individual that harmony is re-established.

The re-instatement of the heart as the center of a person however is not easily accomplished. The reason for this is that there are many beliefs in the mind/brain that lead the individual to fear or mistrust the heart’s motives or capability in supporting the individual. Ironically such beliefs then keep the person in a state of disharmony.

The extent to which a music therapist, or any therapist for that matter, is ruled by such beliefs renders her/him unable to effect a true state of internal harmony and optimal tuning in the patient. Such beliefs are often deeply conditioned in the therapist, held at an unconscious level and effectively convey a disharmony in the music that they produce in the therapeutic situation.

By clearing these conditioned beliefs it is possible for the therapist to tune themselves to their own inner harmony thereby allowing them to improvise a form of “pure musical harmony” in the therapeutic setting that helps the patient optimally tune into their own internal harmony. The permanent clearing of such conditioning from one’s bio-energetic field has recently become possible through a new tool called the Mind Resonance Process developed within the last several years.
